Sport and exercise for people with disabilities

We're proud to offer specialised rehabilitation services for para-athletes up to 25 years old. Our unique approach combines paediatric rehabilitation expertise in the context of para-sport, creating personalised plans that optimise both athletic performance and everyday functioning.

We work with the whole spectrum: people who are new exercise, right through to Paralympians.

The Superkid Rehab Difference

Unlike sports medicine, our approach begins with understanding your disability first, then addresses your athletic goals within this context.

For example, shoulder pain in a swimmer with cerebral palsy may require both conventional management by a sports doctor and our specialised treatments like botulinum toxin for high muscle tone, all timed correctly around training and competition.

Our holistic perspective ensures we're not just treating the athlete, but the whole person.

Our Model Of Care

We believe in thorough, collaborative care for optimal outcomes:

  1. Comprehensive Preparation: We review all medical, allied health and sport documentation at least 3 days before your appointment to maximise our face-to-face time.

  2. Detailed Initial Assessment: Your first 1-hour appointment results in draft goals, an initial management plan, any necessary investigations and a report.

  3. Coordinated Team Approach: We conduct structured 1 hour meetings with your entire support network, including GPs, allied health professionals and coaches. We collaboratively develop management plans that align with your training cycles, competitions and life goals.

Specialised Services

  • Advanced Muscle Tone Management: Including botulinum toxin injections and specialised medication regimens

  • Fatigue Management Plans: For sport, daily activities and athletes that do long-haul travel

  • Innovative Adaptive Equipment: Collaboration with industrial designers to create bespoke solutions that enhance participation and performance. Check out our prototype for adaptive skateboarding here

Important Note on Classification

While we don't determine Paralympic classification categories, we work closely with official classifiers to ensure they have the comprehensive medical information needed for their decisions.

Our role is to provide accurate diagnosis documentation of your disability to support the classification process.

Experience & Expertise

Dr Gaj brings nearly a decade of dedicated experience working with para-athletes across multiple environments. As the Chief Medical Officer of the Para-START program at the University of Queensland, he has developed collaborative approaches to adaptive sport. He has presented and run workshops at international rehabilitation conferences about utilising physical activity in disability management.

His unique perspective comes from multiple vantage points: medical provider, former physiotherapist and community track and field coach who has worked directly with para-athletes. Dr Gaj has personally experienced the athlete's journey as an amateur track sprinter for over 30 years. Now competing at the masters level, he understands the value of adaptive sport more than ever.

Understanding the Elite Athlete Mindset

What truly sets our approach apart is our understanding of the elite athlete mindset. We recognise that para-athletes are competitors with unique training demands, psychological needs and performance goals.

Dr Gaj’s dual experience as both practitioner and coach allows him to bridge the gap between medical necessity and competitive reality.

We understand the difficult balance between pushing limits and managing risk, between short-term performance goals and long-term health, and between the desire to train through discomfort and the need for proper recovery.

Our management plans are designed with this mindset at the forefront, ensuring that rehabilitation strategies complement rather than conflict with the mindset approach that drives athletic excellence.
